UNUSUAL BRAINS: Neurodiversity and Artistic Creation

New York (USA). Outsider Art Fair New York 2019 informs about this years OAF Talk, January 15, from 7 to 9 pm at the Theater at the New Museum, 235 Bowery, New York: „The Many of the legendary artists in the fields of art brut and Outsider Art spent much of their lives under psychiatric care. Some were deemed schizophrenic (e.g. Arthur Bispo do Rosario, Adolf Wölfli, Martín Ramírez) while others were treated for a variety of mental conditions. In recent years the autism spectrum has become more widely understood and artists with autism (e.g. Dan Miller, Susan Te Kahurangi King) have gained wide recognition for the inventiveness of their work“.

Talk panelists will discuss the connection between the unique brain chemistries of such artists and the artworks they create, along with other issues related to art by neurodiverse artists, including how this work is dealt with in the professional art world. Panelists are: Dr. Eric R. Kandel (Professor at Columbia University and a Senior Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute) / Linda Carmella Sibio (contemporary artist based in Joshua Tree, CA. B.A. in Painting from Ohio University. According to Sibio, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia, "the intention and impetus behind my work is to discover, learn, and explore the states of my schizophrenic mind.") / Dr. Gerhard Dammann (Swiss psychiatrist, psychologist and psychoanalyst. Since 2006, he has been Medical Director of the Psychiatric Clinic in Münsterlingen and Hospital Director of Psychiatric Services Thurgau. With his wife Karin collector of Art Brut and Outsider Art from the context of psychiatry). The panel will be moderated by Massimiliano Gioni (Artistic Director of the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York). He ist widely known in Outsider Art for his curation of The Encyclopedic Palace at the Venice Biennale 2013, which stood out for its groundbreaking inclusion of artworks by dozens of self-taught artists.

Art Brut im Iran

Paris. In Kooperation mit Galerie Polysémie (Marseille) zeigt die Pariser Galerie Claire Corcia noch bis 22.12.2018 "Art Brut in Iran". Präsentiert werden Arbeiten von acht zeitgenössischen Outsider Art-Künstlern aus Persien, darunter Samaneh Atef Derakhshan, Salim Karami und Reza Shafahi. Beide Galerien führen das Segment Außenseiterkunst und sind durch ihre regelmäßige Präsenz auf der jährlichen Outsider Art-Messe in Paris bekannt.
